DyeStatNV Regional Championship Highlights

 

North –

No big surprises in the 4A boys as Spanish Springs won by 23 over McQueen.  Douglas finished 3rd by 10 over Douglas. Henry Weisberg from McQueen won with a 16:40 on a rainy, muddy day at Shadow Mountain Park in Sparks.  Douglas’ John Munyun was 2nd (16:55) and Spanish Spring’s Daniel Horner was 3rd (16:59).  Reno’s girls made it look easy with a 23 point victory over Damonte Ranch.  McQueen placed 3rd and will make the trip to State.  Reed’s Samantha King-Shaw won by :18 over Wooster’s Gillian Ipsen 19:52-20:10.  Reno’s Kyra Hunsberger was 3rd in 20:12.

 

In the 3A, Spring Creek won both boys and girls.  The boys won by 15 over Elko with Truckee third.  The girls didn’t have it so easy as they won by one point over Truckee.  South Tahoe was third with 62 points.  William Fallini-Hass from Spring Creek placed 1st in 17:27.   Alex Klekas (Elko 17:43) and Cole Campbell (Spring Creek 17:46) were 2nd and 3rd.  Rylie Lusk from Spring Creek won with a 20:20 followed by Truckee’s Brenna Wapstra Scott (20:26) and Elko’s Kacie Bell (20:29)

 

North Tahoe swept the 2A Boys and Girls Championship.  The boys won by 17 over Sierra Lutheran (33-50), with Silver Stage punching their ticket to State in 3rd.  North Tahoe won the team title in convincing fashion soring a near perfect 17 points over Sierra Lutheran (43) and Wells (69). Sierra Lutheran’s Jared Marchegger won (17:54) over North Tahoe’s JC Schoonmaker (18:24). North Tahoe’s Quinn Lehmkuhl placed 1st in 21:00, followed by Incline’s Ursula Volz (21:44).

 

South –

Sunrise Boys- Green Valley’s boys won their 3rd straight Sunrise Championship with a 29 points over Bsic (59) and Coronado (85).  The Gators placed 5 in the top 8 as Omar Rubio placed 1st (16:02).  Silverado’s Omar Aguilar Espinoza was 2nd (16:16) and Basic’s Seth Blackwell was 3rd in 16:21. 

 

Sunrise Girls- Green Valley won a very tight team race with Foohill by 1 point (46-47).  Coronado was 3rd with 94. Basic’s sophomore Raquel Chavez easily placed 1st and was just 1 of 2 girls to break 19:00 (18:58) on the course.  Green Valley’s Mia Smith was 2nd (19:31) and Foothill’s Myna Buckley was 3rd in 19:38.

 

Sunset Boys- Arbor View looked great with their 25 point margin over Palo Verde (21-46).  Centennial placed 3rd with a tie-breaker over Clark (109).  Palo’s Daniel Ziems had the meet’s fastest time and repeated as champion with a 9 second win over Arbor View’s Ian Jackson (15:38-15:47).  Arbor View’s sophomore Noah Ayala was 3rd in 16:17.  In all, Arbor View placed 5 in the top 7.

 

Sunset Girls- Centennial continued their Southern Nevada dominance with a 42 point win over Palo Verde (21-63).  This was the Bulldogs 6th straight Sunset Regional Championship.  Centennial’s Alexis Gourrier placed 1st in 18:41 with the meet’s best time.  Palo Verde’s Emma Wahlenmaier was 2nd (19:14) and Centennial’s Kayla Roberts was 3rd in 19:22.  Centennial placed their soring 5 in the top 8.

 

3A Boys- SECTA captured the team title with closely fought 8 point margin over Pahrump Valley (42-50).  Cheyenne placed 3rd (97) and with 4 teams from the 3A moving on to State, Moapa Valley placed 4th with 115.  After 2 years of coming close, Pahrump’s Bryce Odegard won with a time of 16:10, 18 seconds better than 2nd place Bruce Troncoso from SECTA. Both SECTA and Pahrump placed 4 in the top 13, but SECTA’s 5th, Brayden Miller made the difference placing 15th compared to Pahrump’s 18th place 5th man.

 

3A Girls- SECTA made it a clean sweep of the 3A team trophies with a relatively easy 36 point win over Boulder City (26-62). Desert Pines placed 3rd (74) and Cheyenne placed 4th (98).  SECTA’s top 5 placed 3-4-5-6-8!  Boulder City’s Sierra Selinger defended her 2015 championship winning by 4 seconds over Desert Pines’ Nayeli Perea-Barco 19:51-19:54)

 

2A Boys- West Wendover’s 7 hour drive to North Las Vegas was well worth it as they won the championship by 10 points over The Meadows School (47-57).  Lake Mead Christian placed 3rd with 77 and qualified for State.  White Pine’s Samuel Stewart defended his 2015 championship with 14 second win over West Wendover’s Jorge Aguirre (17:02-17:16)

 

2A Girls-  The Meadows School continued their 2A dominance with a 23-48 win over Laughlin.  Lincoln County placed 3rd with 49.  Meadows’ Ellen Hirsberg made it 3 straight 2A championships easily winning in 20:07.  Teammates Ashley Lee placed 2nd in 22:41 and Emily Herndon was 3rd in 23:55.

 

 

The NIAA State Championship is Saturday November 5 at Craig Ranch Park in North as Vegas.
